Quilts for the Needy Provide Warmth for the Winter

By David Gammon, Lutheran-Episcopal Church of the Savior, Newland

Many Avery County residents will have a warmer winter this year, thanks to the efforts of a group of quilters at the Church of the Savior in Newland.

Since 1998, the Church of the Savior has hosted a group of local quilters, and each year the group has met during the summer months to make warm and colorful quilts for the local needy. So far, they have produced over 1,500 quilts. In 2023, there were nine dedicated quilters, including two church members and some others who drove from as far away as Black Mountain twice a month to do the Lord’s work with their needles and thread. Group leader Joyce Kramp challenged the group this year to make 100 quilts, and the group proudly created 102 masterpieces of all colors and styles. The quilts were blessed during the Sunday service on October 1.

The quilts will be distributed through local agencies such as the Ram’s Rack, Meals on Wheels, the Avery County Health Department, local foster care, and local nursing homes.

Truly this is an example of the many ways we may serve our Lord!
