On Easter Sunday, St. James Episcopal Church in Black Mountain joyfully dedicated its long-awaited playground. The celebration took place during the Easter service and was followed by a lively egg hunt for children.
The playground is a dream finally realized—delayed first by the COVID-19 pandemic and later by Hurricane Helene. The Rev. Judith Whelchel, rector of St. James, said Easter was chosen for the dedication because, after years of setbacks and planning, the project has become a symbol of new life.
Director of Godly Play, Lu Ann Wilks, envisioned a natural, outdoors play space. Designed by April Carder, it features elements like a tree tunnel to Middle Earth, a bridge over peaceful waters, and a snail-shaped spiral labyrinth.
The project came to fruition under the leadership of Associate Rector the Rev. Dr. Bruce Grob and Junior Warden Dick Weaver. The playground was dedicated to Karen Montaperto, who devoted her life to being a teacher and was a beloved member of the St. James community.
Thanks to overwhelming community support—in both funding and hands-on effort—the playground at St. James Episcopal Church is now a sacred and joyful space where children can learn, play, and grow.
