Canton Church Awards Grants to Five Mothers

In early 2024, St. Andrew’s on-the-Hill in Canton established the Walter Headrick Memorial Fund. Created from a $10,000 endowment, it provides grants to help offset tuition, fees, childcare, etc. incurred by mothers pursuing an academic or vocational degree.  Applicants must be attending educational institutions located in Western North Carolina and do not have to be members of St. Andrew's nor be an Episcopalian.

We are grateful to our donor, Mary Haynes, that we could award grants to five mothers in May 2024. Our current recipients attend three different institutions in WNC and are pursuing degrees in education, science, and counseling.

Walter W. Headrick (1907–1984) believed that education fosters dignity, transforms futures, and turns hopelessness into dreams that happen. He was an educator, counselor, mentor, coach, friend, beloved father, and champion of equal opportunities for all, especially for women. Throughout much of his life, he encouraged and helped girls and young mothers with children to pursue higher education. This fund honors that legacy.

Find more information about the fund on our website (www.standrewscanton.org) under "Community Engagement". We welcome donations to help other mothers work toward their educational goals with a check to St. Andrew's for "The Walter Headrick Fund."
